Swimming Pool Heating & Heat Loss

  • Swimming Pool Cover: Reduce your pool’s heat loss by using a pool cover. This can result in up 70% in savings, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
  • Swimming Pool Shelter: Adding landscaping, hedges, fencing, and cabanas can reduce heat loss by sheltering your pool from winds.
  • Replace Heater after 5 Years: If your swimming pool heater is more than 5 years in age, it’s likely that purchasing a new high-efficiency gas heater would quickly pay for itself in utility bill savings.
  • Swimming Pool Heat Pump: Compared to a gas heater, a pool heat pump can save you up to 80% in energy usage.
  • Pool Thermostat: The most healthy swimming pool temperature is 78 degrees, according to the National Swimming Pool Institute and the American Red Cross. Reducing your heater or heat pump thermostat to maintain a 78 degree or lower temperature also helps to conserve energy. In addition, if you use your pool only on weekends, reduce your heater or heat pump thermostat settings by 8-10 degrees during the week. It can be extremely helpful to install a thermostat timer or control system.
  • Taking Vacations: When leaving on vacation for more than a week, turn off your pool heater or heat pump, including the pilot light. When you return and reopen your pool, make sure your heater or heat pump is working properly.

  • Energy Efficient Pool Pumps: If possible, replace your pool pump with a more energy-efficient model. Today, new variable speed pool pumps (with permanent magnet motors and digital controls) can save as much as 90% in utility costs compared to 1-or-2-speed pumps with induction motors. If using an energy-efficient 1-or-2-speed pump, make sure your pump is sized to your pool’s specific requirements.
  • Reduce Run Time or Speed: If using a one-speed pump, reduce filtration run time. In general, water needs to be circulated through the filter once every 24 hours. If using a two-speed or variable speed pump, use the lowest speed to appropriately circulate the water. Ultimately, reducing speed saves more energy than reducing run time.
  • Filtration During Off-Peak Hours: Run your pool’s filtration system during off-peak hours when electricity demand is lower, generally between 8 PM and 10 AM. Install a timer or a control system to automate the your pool’s hours of operation.
  • Clear Away Debris: Make sure you keep intake grates clear of debris. Clogged drains force the heat pump to work harder.
  • Regular Filter Cleaning: Make sure you backwash or clean your filter regularly in order to obtain maximum filtration and energy efficiency.
